A Story of Kubera

In the southern outskirts of Koguryo lived an old, happy lookin’ lady. Dressed in the brightest clothes, with long, gray hair. For ages she’s been telling young travellers of her tale.

She spoke about her daughters birth stone, that was given to her at birth. It was a dull, scuffed up blue ring, with a small engraving next to the birth stone. It read “Kubera.” She spoke of her remembrance of the god and had wished for her daughter to grow and become rather prosperous in life, just like her sister has done. So, she had the birthstone engraved after the god, so everytime her daughter looked upon this stone, she’d think of the god Kubera, and keep herself focused on life, and the success hardwork would bring to her.

“I taught my daughter within my home for sixteen years. She was an incredibley fast learner, and surpased my intelligence. After our teachings, she worshipped Kubera, in hopes that he will grant her the power to use her intelligence, to become successful in life. 16th year, second moon, my daughter vanished, with a trace of sand leading to the loom. There laid a note.

——————-
“Mother, Tonight a strange man has come to my bedroom. He told me father was waiting at the southern gates of kugnae. Kubera has come for us. We will return soon.

Love,
Your daughter”

My daughter returned with a gold necklace dangling around her neck, elegant clothing, and shouted. “Oh, mother! Look at me! Kubera was so impressed with my hardwork and determination, that he granted me with riches upon riches.” In her room laid many jewles, diamonds and gold.

She ended up getting engaged to an incredible handsome scholar, who treated her like a princess. They moved off to shilla, and lived in a great big mansion.”

The traveler sat there in awe. Wishing for riches, and finally asked, “How..?”

She grinned, and said “hardwork and determination young one. You can become successful in life as well. Maybe just one day you will be granted many riches from Kubera.”
